Joelle Hsu
VIOLIST
Joelle is an active and versatile Singaporean violist who has had the opportunity to share her playing across the globe. She has been described as a player with sensitive playing, strong technique and a warm mellow tone.
Through the years, she has appeared as soloist with the Baden-Baden Philharmonie, Singapore National Youth Orchestra and the Macpherson Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also performed numerous solo recitals showcasing the possibilities of the viola by featuring both standard and contemporary repertoire.
Passionate about chamber music, Joelle finds opportunities to explore chamber music works with friends and colleagues worldwide, collaborating with artistes such as Nobuko Imai, Alan Kay and Carol Wincenc amongst others. Joelle was frequently invited as Guest Artist with the New Asia Chamber Music Society in New York City and was most recently selected to be part of the Chamber Music Arts Singapore's Homegrown Series, where she is looking forward to performing for the Singaporean audience in the coming seasons.
As an orchestra musician, Joelle also frequently performs as part of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and was also a fellow and full scholarship recipient of Aspen Music Festival and School and Taipei Music Academy and Festival.
Joelle currently divides her time between Singapore and Oslo, studying under Lars Anders Tomter and playing in the Oslo Filharmonien as an academist. She previously studied with Hsin-Yun Huang at the Juilliard School and Manchin Zhang at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, and remains deeply grateful to Sylvia Khoo, who inspired her musical journey.
While travelling to share her love of music, Joelle enjoys hunting for new cafes and reading, as well as sharing with new friends and colleagues about her culture and food from back home.
